Yes, waxing can sting, but for most people it hurts far less than they expect, and it gets easier every time. Each pull is a quick snap that lasts under a second, the most sensitive areas are the bikini line, underarms and upper lip, and the right prep, a skilled esthetician and a steady four to six week schedule make the biggest difference in how it feels.
At Wax & Lash, we have been waxing Denver for coming up on 13 years at our Berkeley and Central Park studios, and “does it hurt?” is the question we hear more than any other. This guide brings together everything we tell our clients: what waxing actually feels like, which areas are most and least sensitive, whether a Brazilian hurts more than a bikini wax, and exactly how to make every appointment more comfortable.
What does waxing actually feel like?
Waxing removes hair from the root, so you will feel it. The sensation is a quick, sharp snap, a lot like pulling off a bandage fast, and it is over in a fraction of a second. It is not a slow or lingering pain. Most first-time clients tell us the nerves beforehand were harder than the wax itself.
How much you feel depends on a few things: the area being waxed, how coarse your hair is, how thin the skin is there, where you are in your cycle, and the skill of the person doing the waxing. Two people can have very different experiences with the same service, which is why we always talk you through everything before we begin.
How long does the sting last after waxing?
The sharp part lasts under a second per pull. Afterward, the area may feel warm or a little tender for 30 minutes to a few hours, and any redness usually fades within the first hour or two. By the next morning, most clients feel completely normal.
Which areas hurt the most to wax?
Every body is different, although after thousands of appointments we see a clear pattern. Areas with thinner skin, more nerve endings and coarser hair feel the most, while areas with thicker skin and finer hair feel the least.
| Sensitivity | Areas | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Most sensitive | Brazilian and bikini, underarms, upper lip | Thin skin, dense nerve endings and coarse hair that grows in several directions |
| Moderate | Brows, chin, chest, back, stomach | Smaller or flatter areas that are quick to wax, with medium skin thickness |
| Least sensitive | Legs and arms | Thicker skin, finer hair and a more even growth direction |
Brazilian and bikini area
This is the most sensitive area for most people, because the skin is thin and the hair is coarse. It is also the area where technique matters most. We work in small sections with soft wax, keep each pull quick, and start every intimate wax with a hot towel service that softens the hair so it releases more easily.
Underarms
Underarms surprise a lot of first-timers, because the hair is thick and the skin is thin. The good news is that an underarm wax takes about ten minutes from start to finish, so it is over fast.
Upper lip and face
The upper lip often makes your eyes water, which is a reflex rather than a sign that something is wrong. Face and brow waxing are small areas, so the whole service is quick.
Legs and arms
Legs and arms are the easiest areas for most clients. Many people who come in nervous for their first leg wax tell us it felt easier than they expected, and it keeps them smooth for three to five weeks instead of a day or two with a razor.
Does a Brazilian wax hurt more than a bikini wax?
A Brazilian usually feels a little more intense than a bikini wax because it covers more of the most sensitive skin. A bikini wax cleans up the edges where skin meets swimsuit, and a French bikini goes a little further in, while a Brazilian includes the front, the labia and between the cheeks.
The difference is smaller than most people imagine. A Brazilian at Wax & Lash takes about fifteen to twenty minutes, and most of our clients describe it as uncomfortable for a few seconds at a time rather than painful. By the second or third visit, the hair is finer and the appointment is noticeably easier. A Brazilian is $65, and your first one is $32.50 because first-time clients get 50% off their most expensive wax.

What happens during a Brazilian at Wax & Lash?
- A quick conversation. Your esthetician asks how much you want removed and answers any questions. Nothing about this surprises us, so ask anything.
- Privacy while you undress. We step out of the room so you can undress from the waist down, and a drape is waiting for you.
- A hot towel service. Before every intimate wax, a warm towel softens the hair and opens the follicle so it comes out more easily and hurts less.
- Small sections of soft wax. Your esthetician works quickly and holds the skin taut with each pull, which makes a real difference in comfort.
- A fresh finish. A feminine wipe is waiting so you can freshen up before you get dressed, and your esthetician will share a few simple aftercare tips.
Why does waxing hurt more on some days?
- Your cycle. Many people feel more sensitive in the days just before and during their period, so schedule around it when you can. Waxing during your period is still completely fine.
- Hair that is too short. Wax needs about three weeks of growth, roughly the length of a grain of rice, to grip cleanly. Short stubble takes more passes.
- Shaving between appointments. Shaving resets your growth cycle, so your next wax feels more like a first wax.
- Sun, retinoids and active skin care. A sunburn, retinol, strong acids and some prescription skin treatments make skin more fragile. Let your esthetician know about anything you are using, because in some cases we will recommend waiting before waxing that area.
- Tensing up. It is a natural reaction, although relaxed skin releases hair more easily. Slow breaths help more than you would think.
How can I make waxing hurt less?
Before your appointment
- Let your hair grow about three weeks, and put the razor away between waxes.
- Exfoliate gently two or three days before your appointment, then skip it the day of.
- Moisturize every day leading up to your wax, then arrive with clean, dry skin and no lotion or oil.
- Go easy on caffeine the morning of your appointment, since it can make some people feel more sensitive.
- Some clients take an over the counter pain reliever about 30 to 45 minutes beforehand. Check with your doctor first if you are unsure whether it is right for you.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing so there is less friction afterward.
During your appointment
- Breathe out slowly as each strip comes off.
- Tell your esthetician how you are feeling. We can pause, slow down or adjust at any time.
- Mention any sensitivity, medications or recent sun so we can choose the gentlest approach.
After your appointment
- Skip hot tubs, saunas, steam rooms and intense workouts for 24 to 48 hours.
- Keep showers warm rather than hot for the first day, and wear loose, breathable clothing.
- Stay out of the sun and tanning beds for a day or two, since freshly waxed skin is more sensitive to UV, especially at Denver’s altitude.
- Start gentle exfoliation again two or three days after your wax, a few light passes every few days, to keep ingrown hairs away.
- If you are prone to ingrowns, Just The Strip, the aftercare line our founder Tawnya created, makes Smooth Operator for regular ingrowns and Truth Serum for reactive skin.
Does waxing hurt less over time?
Yes, and this is the best news about waxing. When you wax consistently, hair grows back finer and sparser, which means each appointment takes less effort and feels like less.
- First visit: Usually the most intense, especially if you have been shaving, because the hair is at its coarsest.
- Visits two through four: Most clients notice a real difference by the third appointment as regrowth becomes finer and more even.
- Visit five and beyond: Regular clients often tell us they barely notice it, and appointments go faster too.
The key is consistency. Booking every four to six weeks keeps your hair in the right growth phase so every appointment builds on the last one.
Why does Wax & Lash use soft wax?
We built our technique around soft wax because, in skilled hands, it clears finer hair in fewer passes, which keeps your appointment short and your skin calmer. A faster wax is a more comfortable wax. Our estheticians are licensed and trained in the same low pain method at both studios, so you get the same care whether you book in Berkeley or Central Park.

Waxing pain questions, answered
Does waxing hurt the first time?
The first wax is usually the most noticeable, because your hair is at its coarsest, especially if you have been shaving. Most first-timers say it was much easier than they expected, and it gets easier with each visit as the hair grows back finer.
Which area hurts the most to wax?
For most people, the Brazilian and bikini area is the most sensitive, followed by the underarms and upper lip. Legs and arms are usually the easiest areas to wax.
Does a Brazilian hurt more than a bikini wax?
A Brazilian usually feels a little more intense because it covers more sensitive skin, although it takes only fifteen to twenty minutes at Wax & Lash and most clients describe it as uncomfortable for a few seconds at a time rather than painful.
How long does waxing pain last?
Each pull stings for under a second. Afterward, the area may feel warm or tender for 30 minutes to a few hours, and most clients feel completely normal by the next morning.
Does waxing hurt less over time?
Yes. With regular appointments every four to six weeks, hair grows back finer and sparser, so most clients notice a real difference by their third visit.
Can I take a pain reliever before waxing?
Some clients take an over the counter pain reliever about 30 to 45 minutes before their appointment to take the edge off. If you are unsure whether it is right for you, check with your doctor first.
Why does waxing hurt more during my period?
Many people are more sensitive in the days just before and during their period because of hormone changes. You can still get waxed on your period, although booking a few days after it ends may feel more comfortable.
Is waxing less painful than it used to be?
Technique makes a big difference. At Wax & Lash, we use soft wax in small sections, start every intimate wax with a hot towel service, and work quickly, which is why so many clients tell us it is the most comfortable wax they have had.
